The two rarely mix, Facebook is full of a huge variety of time wasting applications that can see your working day disappear. Running a farm, fighting gangsters and viking invaders plus even talking and looking up your friends can almost be a full time occupation in itself.
So how do businesses cope with web sites like Facebook? Well I work as a consultant and see many approaches from the outside block to the threatening manager and in my opinion one option works better than most. The problem with using technology to block access to websites is there’s normally a way to bypass them unless you spend lots of money and effort. All it takes is one technical employee to figure out how to beat internet filtering technology that you’ve installed and soon everyone will know.
The approach that seems to work best is a grown up, don’t restrict but have an acceptable use policy in place for the internet. Allow individuals to use the internet in their own time for such sites like Facebook, but make sure that people know that usage is logged at all times.
When people know that the amount of time they spend on a web site is logged then they rarely abuse internet access.
